Layers
- Customer self-service backups for routine changes.
- Provider-managed account backups for common restores.
- Server-level backups for major incidents.
- Off-site or immutable backups for disaster recovery.
- Manual pre-change backups before migrations or risky edits.
Policy items
Document retention, restore fees if any, exclusions, backup frequency, and whether backups are guaranteed. Customers should understand that backups are a safety net, not a replacement for their own copies.
Restore safety
Restores can overwrite newer data. For important sites, ask for a copy restore or staging restore first when possible. Ecommerce, forums, CRMs, and membership sites need special care because new orders or user records may exist after the restore point.
